I do not currently teach algebra 1, but I also thought this activity would really get kids motivated (food usually does the trick).  I also thought that it was neat how it came out to be exponential.  I bet the kids wouldn't guess that.  The activity is simple enough that all of the kids could be involved.  I am definitely going to recommed this activity to the 8th grade math teacher when he introduces exponential functions.

I have used several of the activities like the Three Sisters as warm-up activities in my upper level classes. I have used more technology this year. I will continue to add in activities as we reach the topics covered.
Dawn

A lot of teachers talk about the three sisters activity.

Could you please give me the details?

I am always looking for new things to try to keep my class fun.

I have used a few of the activities in my Algebra 1 classroom. I have used the Recursion worksheet, the TI-84 Scavenger Hunt, the Shapes of Algebra, and the Four Sisters Race. My favorite was the Four Sisters Race because many of them struggled to create their own story, but I encouraged them to take ownership and do their very best. This activity allowed me to realize how I was opening the minds of my students to the many possibilities that exist. Giving them a say was more than some of my students could handle, but I think they gained some confidence behind it.
I used Four Sisters as a warm-up as well. The stories were immensely creative! Who knew a few adolescents could be so imaginative??
I have used a few of the activities so far this year. For example, I used the Four Sisters Race activiety. The students seemed to grasp the concepts well. They also were fairly engaged during the "make up your own story" about the graphs. Some of them were pretty interesting. I also adapted the activity that discusses how one wants to get paid (exponential graphs). They seemed to enjoy it because they love activities that deal with money.
Some activities that I have tried in my classroom from Algebra for All year one includes: The Four Sisters Race, Marching in Place and the Shapes of Algebra. When I presented the Four Sisters Race it was very interesting to see how the students interpretted the graphs and how they presented their "story" about what happened in the race. They also liked the Marching in Place activity because they worked in groups and I liked it as well because when they presented thier graphs in class, I could tell what they were able to interpret from thier data. The Shapes of Algebra was frustrating for my Algebra I students, we worked through it but it was a struggle. I used it as in intro to functions and it did help the students to see the different graphs but all of the groups had a hard time with the real world example. But hopefully, as we work throughout the year, this will become easier for them.
So far I have tried a variation of the shapes of algebra activity, the four sisters activity and the marching in place activity. Later this year, I will be implementing the egg launch activity and the Lilly’s mussels activity. Additionally, I would like to use the Make Me Rich activity toward the end of the year as a basis for comparison.
I, too, am interested in using the "Make Me Rich" activity. I would be interested in hearing from you how it worked, and any variations that you used to implement the activity.
I have used the Four Sisters Race. I even had students do a demonstration of what was happening with a group of four "replaying" the race in front of the class.
I have used the spaghetti activity, and it was very successful. It was important to clarify the definition of a "line of best fit" before we started the activity, as many of my struggling students wanted to connect the points.

I also tried the "Four Sister's Race". I had my Pre-Algebra students act out the race and explain what happened in each race. They were quite creative. One student thought that Dora had to stop to use the bathroom. They really had fun with the activity.
The students were very engaged in this activity.  This activity is definitely one I will use again.
