"Big Idea Math" Algebra 1 - A balanced approach

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some feedback about a textbook series "Big Idea Math - Algebra 1" authors Ron Larson and Laurie Boswell.  Our district is contemplating buying it and I must say it looks promising... but it is so new that I haven’t seen a review of the series that is either positive or negative.   If you have any knowledge of this series at all, please share your input.  Who has taught through this series? Have you had a son or daughter who took the class?  What do you think?…See More

What to focus on: ACT EXPLORE or Smarter Balance

There is an old farmer saying, "the cows don't get any fatter by weighing them!".  In that spirit, I would rather spend more time teaching students than measuring what they know.I'm trying to figure out which assessment I should focus on: the ACT Explore test (which is age normed and consistent with the ACT test... which all of our students take as juniors)  or the Smarter Balance assessment that feeds into the common core.Neither seems to have a lot of resources developed for them yet. Any…See More

What is a teacher worth?

Posted on March 24, 2011 at 7:20pm 2 Comments

Below is a playful (yet passionate) interpretation of the perception that teachers are nothing more than "glorified babysitters".  The author, David Coffey from Spring Lake, hits a chord with me and some of the frustration I have felt (as of late) regarding the public's perception of teachers.

Enjoy and feel free to comment.

BTW... this article is starting to pop up in newspapers throughout the state.  I found it at Mlive.com at this…

"First look" analysis of the common core and ACT

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 8:00am 0 Comments

Welcome to 2011 everyone.

Attached below is a study published by ACT that reflects on and uses last year's ACT data from states like Michigan to predict how students would have preformed in relation to the Common core standards.

Not surprisingly, the study confirms the ideas and principals of mathematics instruction that we have been discussing at A4A for two years now!

Here is an exerpt from the article:

Hey Art.  Thanks so much.  I look forward to using this resource quite a bit in my district (Elko County SD) in Nevada.  We are this next year implementing the Algebra I ccss.  We just finished the scope and sequence for the district and I think we are ready to go.  Take care, friend...Jeff

Hi there. I have been sharing information you posted a while back about the common core and HSCE connections with co-workers. Larry Wyn was very surprised when I mentioned your name. I told him that you are on the A4A site, but he has trouble getting on. His email is lwyn@moisd.org

He would like to hear from you.

Oh - and thanks for all the common core stuff - anything new would be great!

Thanks Sandy

Hello Arthur,
Thanks for the journal post on the importance of using graphing calculators. Even though I have questioned their benefits, I still use them regularly with my lessons. They are the next best thing to compete with my students' interest in their cell phones. I read from your page how NC is using cell phones in the teaching of Algebra. How interesting is that? Funny you should respond to my blog because I found your math book by topic the other day and I would like to use your lesson on recursive notation/functions with my students. I think using their family history to teach this concept is a great idea!
