If you were asked to create lists covering the similarities and differences between exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions, what would you have on your lists? I recently had to answer this question from the seat of a student and was surprised how long it took me to decide what to write down. When I talked with my students, they mostly went with the graphs (which I also did), but a few talked about the inverse. As a learner, I was not sure - which made me think about rubrics and I… Continue

Moving onto exponential functions in my classroom, I wanted to try one of the activities we did in Algebra for All, so I re-wrote the Stations of Algebra for exponential functions.

I kept the main part of the activity the same, giving students 4 stations to complete. For the base function I used 2x. Each station either changed the starting point of the function, or the base of the exponent. To hurry along the process, I had each group (2 or 3 students) graph one station. After they… Continue

During the first meeting for Algebra for All we took part in the activity called “Shapes of Algebra.” First off I want to say how glad I am that we go through the activities that we are given so we get the chance to see how they work. Also important is the chance to talk about modifications and extensions that we might want to try in our classrooms. Again this is where having a room full of math teachers comes in handy.

I also want to say that I enjoy the presenters saying to us that… Continue
