What philosophy are you taking with the alignment of your instruction?

For grades 9-12, the question seems to be, "Should we start from scratch with the common core, match as much as we can from our existing classes... then find a place for any standard that doesnt already fit? Or do we continue with the HSCE's course structure and that the alignment between the hsce and the common core can be made tight with a few additions?"

Personally, I don't want to have to reinvent the wheel unless we need to or have too... so in that way i favor keeping the existing hsce course structure.

However, I am always skeptical about adding a layer of "alignment" between instruction and the learning objectives. If we stay with the hsce course structure, our instruction is aligned to hsce's which is aligned to the common core. Although it is easy to say this hsce standard = this common core standard, there are always little "philosophical" differences between the two usually found in the verbiage. So in that way, I favor restructuring courses starting from scratch with the common core.

Thank you again for posting this. Our district has scheduled 5 1/2 day sessions to align our curriculum to this as well. I hope it will not take that long as we have spent a great deal of time doing aligning to the Michigan standards, HSCE and GLCE. Thank you
